Week 3: Tutorial

This week's tutorial was the first tutorial session. We have covered some techniques to investigate domain names of multinational brands, how they operate in different countries, and website ranking.

To make it interesting to myself, I chose Manchester United Ltd (manutd.com) based in Manchester, UK.

Using the Alexa.com website information system, I found following data (as of 27th Aug 2012):

Alexa traffic global rank: 2,577
Alexa rank in Great Britain: 347



As shown above in the screenshot, the percentage of site visits from search engines is displayed in specific period of time. For example, there was 12% of visits which is directed from the search engines last month. Moreover, 28.20% of overall search queries came from a keyword "manchester united".



As Manchester United is one of the most popular global icons, the website has many subdomains those point different topics such as online store, forum community, television, radio, betting, different regional sites and more.

The screenshot shows the most percentage of visitors access the major domain of manutd.com. Also small percentage of visitors go different separate domains depending on the areas of interest.

It shows there are six different language options on the website other than the English. All different language sites are operated at different subdomains.
French, Spanish, Arabic, Chinese, Korean, and Japanese versions of the website are currently online.
